Restaurants in UAE must serve up Arabic menu

The UAE Ministry of Economy has ordered all restaurants to start using Arabic language on their menus.

Officials warned that outlets caught flouting the law would be slapped with fines of up to Dhs100,000. Inspectors from the ministry will soon start making surprise visits to various restaurants to ensure that all comply with the rules.

Hashim Al Nuaimi, director of the Consumer Protection Department at the Ministry of Economy, said: “This decision is in line with plans by the UAE to make Arabic the basic language in all trade and official dealings.”

Consumers have been urged to report outlets that fail to comply with the new rules.
